bredie is the sa word for stew. this is 100% pure winter food...
heat a dash of olive oil in a large saucepan and sauté 2 large sliced onions and 2 cloves of crushed garlic until soft. add 1kg stewing lamb and brown over high heat.
mix 3 tablespoons of marmite with 300ml boiling water and add to the saucepan. cover and simmer gently for 1½ hours.
add 300g baby potatoes, 2kg diced butternut, 1 teaspoon ground ginger, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon and 2 teaspoons brown sugar. continue to simmer for a further hour or until meat is tender.
mix 2 tablespoons of flour with cold water and stir through the bredie. simmer for a further 10 minutes until the sauce has thickened to your liking, adding salt and freshly ground pepper to taste.
serve with rice. yummy…

nice, but please omit the MARMITE, all i've heard about it makes me shudder :(
mmmm that sounds wonderful. I love winter food. That's something I've struggled with, while in the southern United States. I can't get used to all the salads and outside foods.

you know , i read your recepies and suffer .... i amgoing to try some of then , i am vegan but i don't care .
about the marmite , do you believe that is impossible to find it here? and the first time i taste it was in a hostel and a australian girl gave me a litle bit for taste at the breakfest . i loved , but was the only time i tasted .
it is incredible how very small things of the every day culture makes two pearsons live in totaly diferent worlds .
that's what i love in art , sentiments put us all together and still develops individuality .
I like the spice combination you use for the butternut. I think I will try it for another type of squash we have here in Puerto Rico, calebasine, which is not the real or English name...I think it is a local name for a quick growing zucchini-only one that was allowed to mature into a harder yellow squash.
Thank you for coming over to Oasis Writing Link (OWL) blog. I hope we get to know each other better. Do you write in this blog or your other one more often? <3
Hi ~ what a fantastic surprise to find out that you have a recipe blog! I am currently growing butternut squash in my garden so I am going to try this although I am not sure about the Marmite - I have never had that and am not sure if they sell it here in New Hampshire. I will have to search for that. I am always searching for new recipes - I love cooking and sharing meals with my family and friends - enjoy!
